With Code 8, this was a small movie that we made independently and then we made a licensing deal with Netflix. Sometimes it's just the right time, and I think Amazon and Netflix are giving filmmakers and creative people an opportunity to get something out to the masses. There's not always any rhyme or reason why a movie is successful or not, a movie can be well reviewed and not make any money and a movie can review terribly and make a fortune. You can take a risk on these streaming networks that are tough to warrant in the theatrical world because they're such a financial risk taking them out theatrically and just hoping it does well. I just think the convenience factor is so high, mixed with high-quality filmmaking now. When given the opportunity, most of the time, I'm going to want to watch a movie in my living room, order some food and pause it when I need to. Obviously, I don't think anybody was expecting a global pandemic, but even before that, I think theaters were becoming more for the $200 million movies. I love going to the movies and to see movies in theaters, but at the same time, I have a 1-year-old son. How has it been working with streaming services, especially with Netflix on feature film projects?Īmell: I really think it's the future. In mentioning streaming platforms, you've gotten to work on these films, you've got Upload at Amazon and you also got to do Code 8 with Netflix. I would love to go back and try to kill Cole, and just getting to work with this cast. Hopefully, I'm being thought of for the third one, and hopefully the second one is successful enough to warrant it. There's so many outlets and streaming networks and things to watch that sometimes you need to get a little weird, and I think these movies are weird in the best way. I think they're a lot of fun, I think they give the audience what they're looking for. I would love to continue to make these movies. Where would you personally like to see Max go next?Īmell: I'm not nearly as creative as the guys that write these movies so anything I say won't be as great as what they come up with. I was talking to McG earlier and he said he had a story for a potential third installment.
